Tooth bleaching is also known as teeth whitening. Childhood teeth are typically whiter than adult teeth because the mineral structure of the teeth change and the tooth enamel becomes less porous. As a result, our teeth become more susceptible to stains from antibiotics, trauma, pulp degeneration, filling materials, genetic and acquired illnesses, foods, coffee, tea, red wine, and bacterial pigments.
There are many different methods used to bleach or whiten teeth such as brushing, bleaching strips, bleaching pens and gels, ultraviolet bleaching (ZOOM Teeth Whitener, for example), even laser bleaching. Please ask Dr. Shirin, your Thousand Oaks dentist, for her thoughts on each method and which one may be right for you.
According to the FDA, teeth whitening restores natural tooth color and bleaching whitens beyond the natural color.
