Teeth Whitening Dentist
Thousand Oaks

When the teeth have a nice shape, a good alignment, and the only issue appears to be that they are too dark or stained, Dr. Shirin, Thousand Oaks dentist, offers excellent teeth whitening techniques to dramatically change the radiance of your smile in just one hour. Teeth whitening in our Thousand Oaks office is painless (no drilling) and gives you a perfect sparkling smile with beautiful white teeth that even Hollywood celebrities would envy.

Teeth Whitening Methods

There are many teeth whitening methods, such as brushing, bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel, laser bleaching, and natural bleaching.

Traditionally, at-home whiteners use overnight trays containing a carbamide peroxide gel that reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide has about a third of the strength of hydrogen peroxide. This means that a 15 percent solution of carbamide peroxide is the rough equivalent of a five percent solution of hydrogen peroxide. Over-the-counter kits whiten teeth with small strips that are placed over the front teeth. The peroxide oxidizing agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and bleaches stain deposits in the dentin.

Power bleaching uses light energy (see Zoom teeth whitening) to accelerate the process of bleaching in our Thousand Oaks dental office. The effects of bleaching can last for several months but may vary depending on the lifestyle of the patient. Factors that decrease teeth whitening include smoking and the ingestion of dark colored liquids like coffee, tea and red wine.

Teeth Whitening Reverses Enamel Discoloration

As we age, our teeth become darker because of changes in their mineral structure that make the enamel less porous. Also, as time moves along, our teeth are exposed to antibiotics, excessive fluoride, trauma, pulp degeneration, filling materials, genetic and acquired illnesses, foods, coffee, tea, red wine, and bacterial pigments that stain, and as a result, our teeth darken. Teeth whitening in our Thousand Oaks offices creates a more aesthetic appearance by reversing the discoloration of tooth enamel. According to the FDA, whitening restores natural tooth color and bleaching whitens beyond the natural color.

Not everyone will experience the same results from our teeth whitening process. Some teeth will whiten more and faster than others. To determine if a patient is a good candidate for teeth whitening, a careful examination and x-rays will help us determine the cause of the discoloration.

Teeth Whitening in Thousand Oaks is performed using one of two methods:

  • You can wear a custom made tray in which the teeth whitening gel is placed and worn either overnight or for 3 hours daily.
  • The other method is performed at A Brilliant Smile Dentist in Thousand Oaks using the Zoom Teeth Whitening System and only takes about one hour. While in our office, we place a protective drape over your lips and gums and then apply the 25% teeth whitening gel. The gel is placed and activated with an ultraviolet light for three or four 15-minute sessions. Although neither procedure produces a permanent effect, annual touch ups requiring only a few days will maintain the original whitened result. The in-office teeth whitening procedure uses same the methods as seen on the "Extreme Makeover" TV reality show.
