Scaling and Root Planning
The deep teeth cleaning, scaling and root planning performed by Dr. Shirin, Thousand Oaks Dentist, occurs below the gum line to remove plaque and bacteria. Root planning smoothes the root surfaces so the gums reattach to the root. Usually, this will be accomplished with the use of a mild local anesthetic so your treatment is completely comfortable for you.
The objective of scaling and root planning, otherwise known as conventional periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy or deep cleaning, is to remove or eliminate the etiologic agents which cause inflammation: dental plaque, its products and calculus, thus helping to establish a periodontium that is free of disease.
Periodontal disease is a bacterial disease and the key to controlling it is the effective reduction of harmful bacteria. In addition to deep teeth cleaning, scaling and root planning, the use of antibiotics delivered directly below the gum line at the site of infection may be used. An antibacterial mouth rinse may also be prescribed to control the harmful bacteria.
